University Academy science teacher Mrs. Vickie Albritton has dedicated 25 years to education, bringing her experience and passion into her classroom.
Mrs. Albritton is from Columbia, Tennessee, which is 40 miles south of Nashville. She attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mrs. Albritton began her teaching career in 1995, immediately after graduating from college. She spent two years teaching in Tennessee, two years in Texas, two years in Alabama, then five years at a Lutheran school in Wentzville, Missouri, then five years at Warrenton High School in Missouri.
After moving to Kansas City, she taught for five years at St. Teresa’s Academy and two years at Kansas City Girls Preparatory Academy.
Now in her second year at UA, she continues to make an impact on her students. Mrs. Albritton currently teaches physical science and chemistry. She is also a co-sponsor of Student Council and the leader of the Upper School science department.
Junior Sky Thomas said, “Mrs. Albritton has impacted me and my class very positively. She’s just so optimistic and full of positive energy.”
Mrs. Albritton said she knew she was meant to teach from a young age.
“I remember thinking during my junior year of high school, ‘I’m supposed to be a teacher,’” she said.
She later chose to work at UA because she wanted to teach kids who are focused on attending college and preparing for their future. Students described her teaching style as engaging since she often uses activities like labs, debates and colorful worksheets to help them better understand the material.
Outside the classroom, Mrs. Albritton enjoys reading mystery and detective novels, walking her dog and spending time with friends, especially around a fire pit.
She likes Kansas City and enjoys the restaurants.
“I like living in the Midwest better than the South,” Mrs. Albritton said.
She said she likes the Midwest better because she enjoys being able to just walk out of the house with no make-up. In the South there are more beauty expectations.
She is also a mother of two. Her son, who is turning 25 in May, is married and expecting a child, and her 22-year-old daughter is recently engaged.
Through both her professional career and personal life, Mrs. Albritton continues to inspire people.
