As summer is about to begin, a new wave of highly anticipated movies, from long-awaited sequels to action-packed films, are set to be released. These upcoming films are expected to grab everyone’s attention this summer.
“Supergirl” is a sci-fi/action film directed by Craig Gillespie. The film is about an unexpected opponent who attacks too close to home, and Supergirl reluctantly joins the fight on a journey of justice.
The film stars Milly Alcock as Supergirl, with other actors such as David Corenswet, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa. The movie is expected to release on June 26.
Another highly anticipated movie is “The Odyssey,” written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film is about Odysseus, who travels on a treacherous, decade-long journey home after the Trojan War.
The movie stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with many other famous actors in the cast including Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo and Lupita Nyong’o. The film hits theaters on July 17.
On July 31, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, will hit the big screen. This Marvel movie will feature a storyline about Peter Parker working as a full-time, anonymous hero after being erased from his loved ones’ memories four years prior.
The movie stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, with other supporting actors including Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, Keith David, Jon Bernthal and more.
Many students have expressed interest in these upcoming releases. Sparrow Leigh-Baker, a senior at University Academy, said she is thrilled about the adaptation of the new Greek mythology movie.
“I’m most excited to see ‘The Odyssey’ movie coming out in July. I’ve always been a big Odyssey and Greek mythology fan, so I’m interested to see how they interpret it in a modern movie,” Leigh-Baker said.
Leilani Tauheed, another senior at UA, said she is most excited for the new horror movies.
“I am most excited to see the movie ‘Ice Cream Man,’ which is a horror/thriller movie. I am excited because I love horror movies, and each one I’ve seen with a title [that has the word] ‘man’ in it is always good.”
Leigh-Baker predicted that action and adventure movies will dominate the summer of 2026. Tauheed, on the other hand, believes another genre will be most popular.
“I think horror is taking the cake this summer. Most of the horror movies going to be released this summer are either continuations or based on a game/book, and those types of movies always hit,” she said.
In the end, whether students are going to the theaters or staying at home, it is apparent that movies play a significant role in summer entertainment. From must-see releases to personal film favorites, this summer movie lineup is already igniting conversation.
