“XO, Kitty” is a show about a 16-year-old girl navigating high school away from home. A spin-off of the “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” movie trilogy, the first season released in May of 2023, and season three just came out on April 2 on Netflix.
The initial plot of “XO, Kitty” follows Katherine “Kitty” Song Covey, the younger sister from the movie trilogy, as she move to South Korea to attend the school at the Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS) to be with her boyfriend and have the opportunity to get closer to her mom, who died while she was a baby and also attended KISS.
In season three, Kitty approaches her last year of high school, trying to manage relationships while also planning ahead for graduation and her future plans.
The series’ main characters include Kitty Song Covey, played by Anna Cathcart; Dae Heon Kim, played by Choi Min-yeong; Yuri Han, played by Gia Kim; Min Ho, played by Sang Heon Lee; and Quincy Shabazian, played by Anthony Keyvan.
During the show’s three seasons, these characters frequently navigate through ups and downs when it comes to romances and friendships. Quincy is Kitty’s closest friend, while Yuri and Dae are love interests who later form a friendship. Finally, Min Ho is Kitty’s friend. After a period of friendship, these two mutually decide they have romantic feelings toward each other.
Tamari Ross, a University Academy sophomore, said, “‘XO, Kitty’ is a very interesting show with a lot of ups and downs, but it will leave you questioning her decisions.”
The target audience is around ages 12-18, as the show features an abundance of conflicts and plot twists involving teens navigating high school, many without their parents being around.
“People who love romance and teen drama would love ‘XO, Kitty,’” said Tionmarie Brown, a UA sophomore.
Jayda Bibbs, a UA sophomore, said, “’XO, Kitty’ is an interesting, cringey, love-filled show with many nice plots throughout it.”
During these different plotlines, Kitty’s character is often portrayed as the matchmaker. She frequently sees a spark between people and plays wingwoman to kick-start relationships. Throughout the show, she is witty and has an independent and sarcastic mindset.
But Kitty is not the only intriguing character in the show.
In the first season, Kitty’s initial love interest is Dae, whom she met in the third movie, “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You.” Dae comes from an impoverished household, which he was ashamed of in early seasons. During this time, he lied to many, which is why he and Kitty’s relationship ultimately ended.
Yuri is a friend of Kitty’s who ends up being Kitty’s second love interest in season two. Their relationship dynamic is unexpected and a shock to Kitty and many viewers.
The final love interest, which is showcased in the newly released season three, is Min Ho. He and Kitty started as enemies in the first season, but as the second season went along, they grew a loving, intense connection. During the show, his character is portrayed to be a nonchalant tough guy. Eventually, he softens up and is very caring.
The trailer of season three gives a glimpse of Kitty’s conflicts with Min Ho, academics and just trying to find her place in the world.
