University Academy’s National Honor Society induction ceremony will be on May 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the UA theater. MyAun Boyd, a graduate of UA’s Class of 2020, will be the guest speaker.
NHS is a nationally recognized student organization. Participants are students who show a commitment to service, character, leadership and academics.
Every year in April, the group’s advisors, Ms. Susie Jackson and Mr. Joshua Burdette, send out an invitation form to academically eligible students with a 3.3 GPA or higher. Then, the students complete the form, answering questions that help school staff members evaluate their candidacy. After all forms have been submitted, the Faculty Honor Council discusses each candidate and determines which students will be inducted into the society.
This year, 10 rising juniors were selected to be inducted as brand new NHS members. They include Ra’Shawn Doss, Anaiya Fielder-Bey, Hannah Getahun, Don’Marie Jones, Tamari Ross, Roy Tucker, CorVaun Phillips-Rice, MarQuan Phillips-Rice, Mariah Wells and Mimoree Wells.
Mr. Burdette said, “I do think that NHS is impactful and beneficial for students. Because NHS members are role models for their peers, it’s an honor to be selected.”
He said another way these students will be impacted is through their roles as spokespeople for the school at a myriad of events.
Mimoree Wells is excited to be inducted as a new member and has her eyes on how NHS can help her grow and develop.
Wells said, “I do think it’ll impact my future based on leadership and help shape my character more.”
She said she thinks what got her into NHS was her high GPA and the way she always does community service for the school.
Something Wells is looking forward to is spending more time with her friends who are in the organization and growing as a person by taking more leadership roles.
Wells said, “I think I’ll contribute to NHS because I like to volunteer for school events.”
Congratulations to the new NHS members at University Academy.
