It’s Halloween eve, and University Academy is hosting its annual Trunk or Treat today from 5:30-6:45 p.m. in the UA parking lot. If it happens to rain, then this event will be held in the small gym.
Trunk or Treat was planned by the senior class, and many seniors will be bringing their own cars to decorate for the event.
Students participating in Trunk or Treat will earn community service hours, as they help to make the holiday fun for students in other grade levels.
Upper School students have also contributed candy in exchange for community service hours.
Keaton Davis is one of the seniors participating in Trunk or Treat. He’s excited to decorate his car and enjoy Halloween with his friends. Although he’s going to have his own fun, he wants this event to be a fun experience for other students, too.
“It allows kids to become something that they may only see in their games and in their movies, to be able to live that character for one night,” Davis said.
He said he believes it’s important for students to enjoy having a Halloween experience.
“I feel like their joy for the holiday will be important now because when people get older, they stay away from the fun parts of the holiday,” Davis said.
Taylor Lane is another one of the seniors who will be participating in Trunk or Treat. This will be her first time going, and she’s excited to be a part of this event.
“These are things that [students are] going to remember, especially for students that plan to graduate from UA,” Lane said. “One day this will be them.”
While the Trunk or Treat may not be extremely frightening, Halloween is full of spooky and scary characters, one being Pennywise. One of Lane’s favorite Halloween memories is from when she came across a Pennywise scare team member at Worlds of Fun’s “The Haunt.”
“My first time at ‘The Haunt’ I was with my siblings,” Lane said. “While I was walking, the scare team member started chasing after me, so I ran and jumped through different lines just to get away from him. I was so scared.”
Whether through spooky characters or activities like a Trunk or Treat, it is vital for students to create new memories and experiences as each season passes by. Students are able to have moments to look back on and remember with their peers.
Lane said she thinks it is important for young students to have the chance to dress up like somebody they love.
“I just think it’s important for kids to be kids,” she said.
